  • Petition to appoint Executor is submitted to the court.
  • The court appoints an Executor. Probate is now formally open.
  • The executor creates an inventory and establishes value of the assets. A notice to creditors is published.
  • Creditors submit claims on estate. Probate court accepts or rejects claims.
  • Assets including real estate may have to be liquidated to pay creditors or divide assets amongst heirs
  • Decedents debts are paid off. Tax returns are filed.
  • Executor files petition to distribute assets
  • Notice of final hearing is sent to heirs
  • At the final hearing the judge will review the estate and approve the distribution
