sequence of events in probate is shown below. The exact procedure may vary from

Heirs and family are given notice that probate will be opened.
Petition to appoint Executor is submitted to the court.
The court appoints an Executor. Probate is now formally open.
The executor creates an inventory and establishes value of the assets. A notice
to creditors is published.
Creditors submit claims on estate. Probate court accepts or rejects claims.
Assets including real estate may have to be liquidated to pay creditors or
divide assets amongst heirs
Decedents debts are paid off. Tax returns are filed.
Executor files petition to distribute assets
Notice of final hearing is sent to heirs
At the final hearing the judge will review the estate and approve the distribution
